All about the 'ish
Let's just say I'm all about the 'ish.
I'm:
Vegan-ish
Spiritual-ish
Althetic-ish
Nice-ish
Driven-ish
Geek-ish
I'm outdoor lover meets city dweller - girl who trail runs and re-hydrates with wine. A yogi who can barely touch her toes. A surfer who gets sea sick. A business driver who failed grade 12 math. I've sold premium wines, yoga pants, paddle boards and surgical equipment.
I literally can not identify specifically with one genre of style, persona, or space...and for many years saw that as a fault, like a broken self that needed to commit and conform.
How do we brand ourselves if we are so many pieces in one form? Who is our audience? Who will buy what we are selling if the connector isn't clear?
This is what I have learned:
You will never know all the stories of your customer, but if you listen and gently dig a little deeper into WHO they are you will realize that there is ALWAYS a connector. Being all about the 'ish becomes your greatest attribute - in a hundred different pieces of self there is a gem that you can pull from, connect on, and let them know that "hey I get you." When you become too specific and one dimensional you close some doors and put up some walls, and somewhere you loose the opportunity to connect to a new audience and be open to new trajectories.
Read your audience, speak from experience, and be comfortable in being multi colored.
